CRI Expands in Texas With WSM Merger as Survey Reveals Partner Pay Gaps

The Thursday Lowdown ⬇️
If you're new around here, every day I share the 4-5 best accounting insights I saw in the past 24 hours.
I scroll. so you don't have to.
💎 WTF of the Day

New Partners Are Feeling Shortchanged
A new survey of freshly minted accounting firm partners shows the glow-up isn’t as shiny as expected. Nearly half said their pay bump was smaller than promised, and almost half said they barely get any useful feedback. Most only get a formal review once a year — which is like coaching an NFL team with one halftime speech.
The advice? Learn the comp structure early, demand specific feedback, and don’t be afraid to push senior leaders for clarity. Otherwise, new partners risk drowning in politics, old responsibilities, and burnout before they ever hit their stride.

CRI Snaps Up San Antonio Accounting Firm
Big time accounting player CRI (Top 25 in the U.S.) just bought Williams Steinert Mask, a local Texas shop with offices in San Antonio and Bulverde. WSM’s three partners and their team handle taxes, audits, and consulting for industries like real estate, construction, and nonprofits.
This move gives CRI its first serious presence in San Antonio. It’s part of a bigger buying spree fueled by outside investors last year, CRI’s been gobbling up firms across the country to expand fast. They didn’t say how much this one cost, but any readers in that area better watch out.

📊 Weekly Trend Chart

America Still Owns the Global Charts
Spotify’s data shows U.S. artists are still the world’s biggest pop exports, they crack the top five in 70 out of 73 countries. At home, Americans stream Americans 79% of the time. Even the UK listens to more U.S. artists (55%) than their own (29%).
But not everyone’s bowing to Taylor Swift and Drake. India leads the charge for local love, 85% of streams are homegrown Bollywood hits. Same story in Italy, Japan, Turkey, and Vietnam, where 80%+ of plays go to domestic artists. K-pop’s also still flexing across Asia.
