Did OpenAI Just Replace the Big Four Accounting Firms?

The Tuesday Lowdown ⬇️

If you're new around here, every day I share the 4-5 best accounting insights I saw in the past 24 hours.

I scroll. so you don't have to.

💎 WTF of the Day

OpenAI Just Bought Into an Accounting

OpenAI is taking an ownership stake in Thrive Holdings, the $1B backed company buying up accounting firms and rebuilding them with AI. Thrive already owns Crete Professionals Alliance (one of the fastest growing accounting firms, with $500M committed) on track for 10 acquisitions this year.

Now OpenAI will embed its own engineers inside these businesses and build custom AI models to automate tax prep, data entry, and back office work, freeing accountants and tech staff to focus on clients.

It’s a big strategic move for OpenAI, which is valued at $500B and planning $1.4T in infrastructure spend. Thrive becomes its live demo of how AI can transform old school service industries at scale.

Trump Signs IRS Math and Taxpayer Help Act into Law

President Trump just signed the IRS MATH Act, a new law that forces the IRS to finally “show its work” on math error notices. When the IRS changes your return, they now have to clearly explain what they changed, show the line by line math, and tell you that you have 60 days to challenge it.

The law also creates a pilot program to send some of these notices by certified mail so taxpayers actually receive them.

Bottom line, no more vague IRS letters that make you guess what went wrong THANK GOD.

 📊 Weekly Trend Chart

The AI Data Center Boom Is Going Nuclear

Data center construction has exploded to $41 billion a year, nearly overtaking all office construction in the US, 2,200% jump since 2014. Investors are ditching office buildings and pouring cash into AI infrastructure instead.

Some say it’s a bubble waiting to pop. David Einhorn warns of massive “capital destruction,” while Sam Altman says OpenAI’s hundreds of billions in planned spending will eventually “look slow.”

And the mega projects keep coming:

• Nvidia and OpenAI’s $100B mega data center
• The $500B Stargate build from OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank
• Meta’s huge new Titan Cluster
