WTF of the Day🤯
Your Firm’s Email. Someone Else’s Scam.

Your client gets an email from your firm asking for tax documents. They recognize the address, so they send them over. Except your firm never sent that email. That’s email spoofing, and a study of 3,609 small U.S. tax practices found just 34% had settings that tell email providers to flag or block messages pretending to be them. The crook doesn’t need your password. They fake the sender address and borrow the trust you’ve built.
Many firms have security checks in place but leave them in monitoring mode. They spot trouble without telling providers to block it. Ask your IT provider whether your firm’s DMARC policy actually flags or rejects fake emails. They should check every service that sends legitimate mail for you before tightening the settings. Your clients shouldn’t have to guess whether an email from their accountant is real.

What’s poppin in accounting🍿
Two Hours on Hold. Then the IRS Hangs Up.
You call the IRS. Wait two hours. Get disconnected. And that wait doesn’t even count in its reported call wait times. A bill that passed the Senate would change that. It would also require callbacks by 2028 when hold times top five minutes. You could get back to work while waiting for the IRS to call you.
The Taxpayer Assistance and Service Act includes 65 fixes, from easier online access to tax records to basic standards for paid preparers. Less chasing paperwork. More protection from people charging to do taxes without proper training. Tax groups want the House to pass it before year-end. The catch? The bill gives the IRS more work without more funding. Getting Congress to agree is one hurdle. Getting the phone answered is another.

Hawaii Is Where Savings Go to Die

Hawaii is beautiful. Your savings account might disagree. A 2025 ranking that looked at debt, housing costs, income, taxes, and cost of living put Hawaii dead last for saving money. North Dakota came in first.
The funny part is the winners are not exactly the places people daydream about moving to. North Dakota, Wyoming, Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska took the top five spots. Turns out the boring states might be doing your bank account a huge favor.
