The Daily Lowdown - March 7 2025

The Friday Lowdown ⬇️

If you're new around here, every day I share the 4-5 best accounting insights I saw in the past 24 hours.

I scroll. so you don't have to.

💎 WTF of the Day

The PCAOB & SEC Are Easing Up on Auditors

After years of hammering auditors with record fines, the PCAOB and SEC are quietly backing off. Regulators ramped up enforcement after major audit failures (think: Wirecard, KPMG’s cheating scandal), but now, the aggressive stance is fading.

Why? Industry pushback. Accounting firms have been complaining that the increased scrutiny is too harsh, too expensive, and slowing business. The PCAOB says it’s still watching, but enforcement actions have noticeably dropped.

For auditors, this could mean less stress. But for investors? It might mean more risk if bad audits start slipping through.

Cohen & Co. Snaps Up Tassi & Co.

Another day, another accounting firm merger. Cleveland based Cohen & Co. is growing again, this time by acquiring Tassi & Co., an Ohio accounting and consulting firm that’s been around for nearly 30 years. The deal strengthens Cohen’s tax, audit, and advisory business while expanding its Midwest footprint.

Tassi & Co. has built a solid reputation working with high net-worth clients and businesses. No price tag was disclosed, but it’s clear that mid-sized firms are bulking up through acquisitions to stay competitive. Expect more of these roll ups as the accounting industry consolidates.

Sweetgreen’s $16 Salad Problem

Sweetgreen, the fancy salad chain, has been bleeding cash despite charging $16 for a bowl of greens.

The problem? High costs, shaky expansion plans, and a customer base that loves the brand but isn’t coming in enough.

Now, they’re betting on fries… yes, fries to save their margins. The logic? People love carbs, and adding a cheaper, high margin side could balance out their pricey greens.

Will it work, or is this just another desperate attempt to stop the bleeding?
