UHY Buys Whalen CPAs as Midwest Deal Streak Grows

In brief

  • UHY acquired Whalen CPAs, an accounting firm founded in 1945 and based in Dublin, Ohio.

  • The deal adds clients across manufacturing, nonprofits, professional services, real estate, health care, construction and hospitality.

  • UHY reported $471 million in revenue for 2026 and has made several acquisitions since Summit Partners invested in the firm in 2024.

An 80-year-old firm joins a much bigger platform

UHY has found its next piece of the Midwest. The Top 50 accounting firm acquired Whalen CPAs, an 80-year-old firm in Dublin, Ohio.

Whalen serves companies and organizations across Central Ohio. Its client list spans seven industries, from manufacturing and construction to nonprofits and health care.

The deal gives those clients access to UHY's larger team and wider range of specialists. It also gives UHY something that is harder to build from scratch: a local firm with decades of relationships.

UHY is buying reach and expertise

UHY said businesses are asking advisers for more specialized help as their work becomes more complex. Buying an established firm can add that expertise faster than recruiting a team one person at a time.

Whalen said joining UHY would bring more resources and services to clients while creating new career paths for employees. The challenge will be keeping the personal service that helped the local firm last for eight decades.

The firms did not disclose the purchase price or Whalen's revenue, partner count or staff size. Those missing numbers make it difficult to measure how much the acquisition changes UHY's Ohio operation.

Private equity is helping fund the expansion

UHY ranked No. 26 on the 2026 list of the 100 largest accounting firms. It reported $471 million in revenue, about 200 partners and more than 2,000 employees across 40 offices.

Summit Partners invested in UHY in December 2024. Since then, the firm has continued a steady acquisition campaign.

In 2026 alone, UHY added Michigan CFO Associates and Anderson, Lower, Whitlow in Iowa. It also bought Larson Tax Partners in St. Louis and added RBT and CMJ in New York.

The real test comes after the announcement

For UHY, Whalen is another step toward a denser Midwest network. For Whalen's clients and employees, the practical question is whether a national platform can add useful specialists without making a long-standing local relationship feel less local.

That answer will not appear in the deal announcement. It will show up in staffing, service and client retention after the two firms begin operating together.
